Veteran Governance and Assurance Professional and Founding President of the ISACA Canberra Chapter
Max Shanahan is a veteran governance and assurance professional with a career spanning almost 60 years. Beginning in the mid-1960s as a programmer/analyst with the Australian Government, he transitioned into IT audit in the late 1970s, initially with the ANAO.
In recent years, Max has served on Audit and Risk Committees in both Federal and local governments.
Max was the founding president of the ISACA Canberra Chapter and held international leadership roles, including involvement with the CISA Certification Board and the COBIT Steering Committee, contributing to the development of COBIT 4 and 5.
He currently serves on ISACA’s Governance of Enterprise Information & Technology Advisory Group, representing ISACA in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 40, the ISO committee on the Management and Governance of IT. Since 2020, he has been the Convenor of Standards Australia’s mirror committee to JTC 1 WG 13: Trustworthiness in IT.Max has authored and edited key works on governance of IT, including AS/NZS 8016 and ISO/IEC 38502. His contributions have been recognised with the John Lainhart IV Common Body of Knowledge Award (2002), ISACA Hall of Fame induction (2021), and Standards Australia Hero (2022).
